03 Beneath the Grid
By Dread Nocturna · Metalcore
Three weeks after the Shattering. Three weeks since Calen watched Nova torn from his arms and pulled into silver light.
The Undergrave entrance stands four blocks from their apartment. Calen descends alone into Hollowtown's skeletal infrastructure, following instructions Nova left in her research journal: If Protocol fails, evidence will be in maintenance logs, Level 2 junction.
Two hundred meters down through emergency lighting and chemical air. The temperature drops with every step. Veil contamination bleeds through the walls—condensation that isn't water, shadows pointing wrong directions, sounds that don't echo. Physics leaking both ways through a dimensional membrane worn too thin.
Graffiti scrawled in dried blood: They knew. August 12. They KNEW. Emergency caches stashed six months ago. Evidence of people preparing for a disaster they couldn't prevent.
At 180 meters, Calen meets a maintenance worker climbing up, eyes hollow with exhaustion. "You're going the wrong way. Everyone goes down. No one comes back up." Then he's gone, disappearing toward the burning surface.
Level 2 is cathedral-scale horror. Junction 7 has become a refugee settlement—forty people huddled around fires, some already transitioning to Lost, humanity dissolving without mercy. The Veil doesn't just take people through ruptures—it leaks, corrupts, changes anyone near thin zones too long.
Kira finds him there. Former Core Keeper security, discharged six months ago for refusing to suppress incident reports. "You worked Core maintenance," she says, reading his coveralls. "That makes you complicit."
The word hits like a blow. Calen had just been doing his job, maintaining infrastructure, keeping the city running. He hadn't known what Core operations were doing in the deep levels. Hadn't asked questions.
But that was the problem.
"Yes," he says quietly. "I was complicit."
Kira takes him to an active terminal. His credentials still work. He queries: Hollow Core operational status.
HOLLOW CORE STATUS: OPERATIONAL
Last Shutdown: Never
Current Operations: Veil Probing Experiments (Classified)
Duration: Continuous for 10 years
They'd never shut it down. The public announcement, the reassurances, the safety protocols—all lies. The Core had been running experimental resonance operations for a decade, testing how much stress the dimensional membrane could take before it failed.
Calen navigates deeper. Ten years of experiment logs. Casualty predictions. Risk assessments marked "acceptable." Then—Year 12—Nova's comprehensive assessment. Her exact prediction: "Cascading membrane failure, displacement event affecting millions." Her recommendation in capitals: IMMEDIATE SHUTDOWN.
Director Shen's response: "Risk assessed as acceptable. Experiments to continue. Dr. Vorus removed from advisory board. Classification: Level 5—Do Not Disseminate."
Three years later, exactly as she predicted: Catastrophic rupture. Twelve breach points. Thirty-eight million displaced.
Cause listed: Equipment malfunction.
They'd known. Nova had been right about everything and been silenced for it. And Calen had maintained the systems that made it possible. Never questioned. Trusted the institution.
He downloads the files. Evidence. Proof. Director Shen's name appears sixty-three times, always approving, always escalating.
Evil as bureaucracy. Murder as policy.
"What are you going to do with it?" Kira asks.
"Find everyone Nova tried to warn. Build a case. Expose what happened. And figure out how to bring her back."
"In that order?"
"No. All at once. However long it takes."
By the time he climbs back to surface, his hands bleed from gripping metal rungs. The evidence weighs heavy—Nova's journal, maintenance logs, data drive. The weight of thirty-eight million lives.
Back in their apartment, Calen spreads everything across the kitchen table. The truth, assembled. Enough to prove pattern. Enough to name names.
He has a mission now. Two paths, same direction.
Find Nova. Expose the truth.
Down.
