The Missing Children
By Quietus · Folk Metal · From the album The Piper Of Hamelin
(The end of the story. The price paid in innocence. The Piper and the children disappear in mountain Koppelberg. )
At break of dawn, he came again
Clad in in a hunter’s outfit,
A crimson cap upon his head
Roaming the silent streets
His pipe already singing
[Verse I]
A softer hymn…
A sweeter call…
For children now to hear
The doors swung wide without a touch
The streets began to breathe
And one by one, they stepped outside
Drawn gently from their sleep
[Pre-Chorus]
No fear, no tears, no questioning
No voice to call them home
A lullaby inside their minds
That claimed them as its own
[Chorus]
Follow… follow… hand in hand
Through silent streets to lands unknown
No shadow falls, no warning cries
Just vivid dreams in waking eyes
Follow… follow… soft and low
Where he leads, the children go
No need for fear, no need to run—
What’s taken now cannot be undone
[Verse II]
Through narrow roads and open gates
Through the town in silent lines
A hundred souls, and thirty more
Led where none had gone before
A nursemaid followed, trembling, pale
A child still held within her arms
She saw the mountain split apart—
And knew this was no madness
[Bridge]
The mountain gave way—
A hollow path
A door of stone
No turning back
[Climax]
No cry, no struggle—mesmerized
One by one they passed inside
The mountain sealed without a sound
And none returned again
[Breakdown]
Gone.
One hundred souls…
And thirty more…
No echo left…
No open door…
[Final Chorus]
Follow… follow… hand in hand
Through silent streets to lands unknown
No shadow falls, no warning cries
Just vivid dreams in waking eyes
Follow… follow… soft and low
Where he leads, the children go
No need for fear, no need to run—
What’s taken now cannot be undone
[Outro]
The town awoke to desperate cries
To empty beds and shattered lives
That street fell silent ever since
No song, no dance, no laughter there
Two children were spared—
One without sight
And one who never spoke.
Their senses shielded them
from the Piper..
They had been delayed…
And the mountain closed before them
Two stones remain.
To mark the place
Where they vanished.
A wound that time could not repair.
And far beneath the mountain’s heart
Where no man dares to roam
The Piper still plays
And the lost are led to their new home
