Thematically, the track confronts the brutal reality that life will inevitably fire arrows of hardship at us—unavoidable sickness, hurt, and foolish decisions. However, the poetic, strictly rhyming lyrics focus on the devastating nature of the second arrow: the self-inflicted wounds of shame, regret, and guilt that we stack on top of our original suffering. It is a visceral exploration of the human tendency to lie awake in the dark replaying past conversations, convincing ourselves that a failed relationship makes us unlovable, or that a wrong turn makes us a fraud. The song is a dark, violent plea to stop picking at our scabs and inventing more suffering in an already harsh world.
